Volkswagen Corrado 1988 - 1995 - History of cars
So in 1988, the Corrado model was launched. It was a compact three-door sports car with a 2 + 2 seat concept. It was developed by Volkswagen but was manufactured by Karmann in its Osnabrik plants.
The Volkswagen Corrado was initially designed as the third version of the Scirocco, but since it was heavier and more expensive, Volkswagen opted for a different name.
Although initially intended for this car to be called Taifun, marketing managers changed their mind about the destructive power of this wind, and named the car Corrado (in the Spanish word correr - race).
Vw Corrado was based on the Volkswagen B3 platform in the back, and forward on the A2 platform, which it shared with the then current Golf and Jetta versions.
Initially, there were two engines on offer: a four-cylinder 1,8 16V petrol with 136 hp and a 1.8 8V supercharged version, which was sold under the G60 design and developed 160 hp. The G60 designation came from the name of the supercharger (G-Lader).
In 1992, two more aggregates arrived. The first was an atmospheric 2.0 16V with 136 bhp and the second a 6 liter VR2,9 with 12 valves and 190 bhp. The VR6 was a real revolution at the time, combining the benefits of the V concept with regular settings, since the cylinders were mounted at a 15 ° angle and had a unique cylinder head. This design allowed engineers to place all 6 cylinders in the same space that normally occupies 4 cylinders.
While some enthusiasts were disappointed with the heavy weight of the car, the Volkswagen Corrado was extremely manageable and was included in the list of "25 cars you must drive before you die", made by the British magazine Car.
Many owners of this car have constantly upgraded and improved their Corrado, so even today there are a lot of supercharged VR6s, many have brakes from more modern models such as the Golf R32. Some also have the ubiquitous VAG 1.8T engine. Some have even been converted to 4 × 4 models.
Volkswagen Corrado was manufactured from 1988 to 1995. , and a total of 97.521 vehicles came off the lane.
