Volkswagen 1500

The VW 1500 was not pretty, but it was as reliable as an old friend, his fans say. Over the years, more than two and a half million vehicles have been manufactured based on the Type 3. These are the Volkswagen 1500, 1600 and Karmann Ghia.

After World War II, Volkswagen was regarded not only as the largest German company but also as the largest German exporter. Below the mantle of this seemingly favorable situation, the Volkswagen people soon started biting their nails, because their entire success was based on a monoculture - Bubi. In the spring of 1961, after a year earlier the German government had sold 40 percent of VW to private investors, Volkswagen At the Frankfurt Motor Show, it introduces a vehicle that along with Bubu introduces its second model - the Typ 3, better known as the Volkswagen 1500.

The VW 1500 was larger and more spacious than the Beetle. Five body versions were introduced at the start: two-door sedan, hatchback, station wagon, convertible and Karmann Ghia, but only three truly came to production - sedan, hatchback and station wagon, while Karman Ghia came to life as a very successful separate model with metal and canvas roof. Volkswagen The 1500 convertible was produced in just 20 pieces. The Type 3 was powered by an in-line four-cylinder engine with a displacement of 1.493 cm3 and power of 53 hp. The engine grew stronger over the next four years until 1965. The 1.584-cm engine was installed3, and since then Typ 3 has been popularly called the Vw1600.

As incredible as it may seem now - the VW 1600 was once a symbol of "high-tech vehicles". He had a lot of innovations that were not typical for his time, and some, such as the side parking light, have not survived to this day. But let's mention - multi-speed wipers, right rearview mirror, armrests on the door and the like. The 1600 model also received electronic fuel injection (and thus became the first such production car), an automatic transmission, a tank cap, a start lock in the steering column, and switched from 1968-volt to 6-volt. The engine now has 12 hp. Volkswagen was produced until 60 and thus ranked among the cars with the longest production 'experience'.

Karmann Ghia
Karmann, which was producing convertibles for Volkswagen at the time, was tasked with making the luxury sports version of the Typ 3. The Karmann Ghia had a coupe and a convertible. It owes its legendary status to the Karmann Ghia solely in design and quality, as the drive and chassis are identical to the standard 1500. This car was an export success that found its customers even in North America.
