Diagnosis using exhaust composition

REACTIONS IN THE CYLINDER

O2 together with HC gives CO2 and H2O
O2 with CO makes CO2
CO is an indicator of the saturation of a mixture
HC is an indicator of saturation (or poorness) of mixture and curve ignition
CO2 is an indicator of the success of the combustion process and is the highest for lambda factor 1
if the amount of CO increases O2 falls
if the amount of O2 increases then the amount of CO decreases
