Diagnosis using exhaust composition

REACTIONS IN THE CYLINDER

  • O2 together with HC gives CO2 and H2O
  • O2 with CO makes CO2
  • CO is an indicator of the saturation of a mixture
  • HC is an indicator of saturation (or poorness) of mixture and curve ignition
  • CO2 is an indicator of the success of the combustion process and is the highest for lambda factor 1
  • if the amount of CO increases O2 falls
  • if the amount of O2 increases then the amount of CO decreases
