Audi A4 B5 1995 - 2001 - USED, ENGINE, FAULTS

Audi A4 B5

Audi A4 B5

Audi A4 B5 - Extremely beautifully designed exterior has attracted many customers. And that attracts even today, despite the fact that the A4 model of the first generation contains numerous problems that were not in favor of the good name of the company. The engines and drivetrain of the Audi A4 are very durable.

These cars are very popular and hold the price. The most popular are diesel variants as well as caravans.

Audi is cheaper than its competitors, Mercedesa i BMW, which makes it attractive and appealing to buyers as a good quality car with a good price.

Although the Audi A4 is in a sense a continuation of the ideas of the almost legendary Audi 80, it is difficult to talk here about any technical similarities. A completely new car was made, all made of galvanized sheet metal, with a new base and aluminum suspension components. Similarly, you can evaluate the interior design - very original, but functional.

COMFORT - Audi A4 B5

Audi A4 B5

Audi A4 B5

Audi The A4 B5 was supposed to replace the well-known and generally accepted older model, the Audi 80, so the standard had to be very high. The high quality of the materials installed in the cabin at that time set new standards for other manufacturers. The seat is adjustable in height, and the steering wheel in height and depth, so everyone, no matter how tall they are, will find the ideal position behind the wheel. There is enough space in the front for the passenger, while the situation on the back seat is a bit tighter.

With the Audi A4, the trunk is 440 l, but the cargo space is relatively small, so you will have to work a little harder when loading things. As for the commands themselves, it can be said that they are even too soft. For example, if you just press the brake a little harder, this Audi will stick you to the windshield, so this requires tenderness and getting used to it. There is no noise in the cabin, and the Audi A4 B5 behaves great on the highway.

The suspension hardness of the Audi A4 B5 has been adjusted just as it should, so the sporty ride will have sufficient adhesion to the road as well as comfortable open-air cruising. The equipment of the Audi A4 B5 can be expected in all models with two airbags, a central locking system, ABS brakes and even power windows and mirrors.

The interior of the Audi A4 is at an already recognizable premium level. The small right rear-view mirror is a bit disturbed and the question is why Audi's designers reduced it. There are not too many seats in the rear bench and the doors are narrow so it often happens that passengers in the rear bench hit their knees when leaving.

The level of safety offers good protection in the event of impact and the presence of airbags, whose number has increased gradually over time.

The body of the Audi A4 is well protected, it is rare that you have a headache due to corrosion unless the galvanized body has been damaged. The factory warranty is as long as 12 years.

Audi A4 B5 experience - Engines

The engine range of the Audi A4 B5 is wide. If you prefer petrol variants, engines with 1.6 to 2.8 liters of working volume are installed. The rational choice in this case would be a 1.8 or 2.0 petrol engine that provides the most optimal performance with reasonable consumption.

If you want a little more power, there is a 1.8 backed by a turbocharger with some 150 hp, which is admittedly quite lazy until the turbine starts. From the diesel engines there are checked German TDI units, of which we recommend 1.9 with 110 hp. There is a weaker one, with 90, but the difference in power is noticeable, and consumption is not much higher than the more powerful model.

Audi A4 B5 - engines:
1.6: 101hp petrol. He lacks more strength.
1.8: Turbocharged petrol, 150 HP.
1.9 TD: The legendary diesel engine. Demonstrated durability. There are 90hp and 115hp versions.
1.9 TDI : 110 hp diesel engine.
2.4: 6 hp V165 engine.
2.8: 6 hp V193 engine.
2.5 TDI : 150 hp diesel engine.

Among the petrol engines of the Audi A4 B5 are very modern devices with five valves per cylinder.

Audi TDI A4 1.9

The TDI badge on the boot of the Audi A4 further raises the price of the car. The first generation Audi A4 had a 90hp engine. Its successor has been boosted to 110 hp and differs from its predecessors in a different engine control unit and turbine. After 2000, a 115hp engine with a pump-injector system appeared. The average diesel consumption is about 6.5 L per 100 km. Oil consumption is about 0.5 L per 10000 km and about 4 L of oil is stored in the engine. The weak characteristics of a diesel engine are the flowmeter, EGR valve and turbine. In order to exceed these generally good engines, good quality oils and Euro diesel are recommended.

FAILURES

As for the engine, and especially the diesel, you can be pretty calm.

And gearboxes also do a great job and are very reliable.

Check for electronic accessories as they are the most common cause of problems, as well as shock absorbers and suspension, because if the car is not regularly maintained, repairs to this type of malfunction can be very expensive.

1.6 engine. The Audi A4 manufactured until November 1995 had many problems with a cold start.

If you opt for the petrol 1.8 variant, we recommend changing the gear belt that burst not so often even before the replacement deadline prescribed by the factory.

The service says that the 1.8T petrol 150T is slightly more durable than the 125hp engine of the same volume.

1.8 T. Engine cracks occur after 100 km.

With the 1.8 and 1.8 T engines made until February 1996, there is a risk of a sudden interruption in lubrication. Caused by oil pump problems, it blocks oil return, increases pressure in the lubrication circuit (4 bars instead of 2), and partially closes the valves. Late 1996 oil pump replaced.

With V-6 gasoline engines with 12 valves, valve blockage is possible.

For V-6 gasoline engine with 12 valves. For no particular reason there has been an increase in oil consumption in the new models.

Audi A4 petrol engines have problems with the fuel pump and the leaking cooling system.

The air flow meter is problematic for vw diesel engineers. They say it more often fails in older models with very high mileage. Therefore, the air filter must be serviced regularly or the air filter replaced more frequently.

The TDI unit is recommended, but slightly better than the 115hp. However, after 200 km, the 000hp and 90hp engines may cancel the pump or indicate the need to replace the nozzle. It is important to use good engine oil and of course good quality Euro diesel.

Engine 1.9 TDI 115. Possible major engine failure after 70 km, engine replacement required. Often caused by a piston problem.

TDI engines. All Audi A4 diesel engines manufactured after December 1998 had a problem, gradually declining after 60 km. The culprit is the air flow meter, the flowmeter, which gets dirty and must be replaced.

The V6 engine often leaks oil at the crankcase gasket at about 150 km.

In the 6th TDI engine. The Audi A4 produced until July 1999 had many problems with the fuel pump, which after 120 km had to be replaced.

V6 TDI. Possible nozzle malfunction, nozzle clogging, will reduce engine power.

Catalyst. The Audi A4 TDI 110, manufactured in May 1998, had problems with premature catalytic converter failure. Replacement was required after 25 km.

Both the 1.9 TDI and V6 engines produced by July 1999 have repeatedly experienced engine cracks.

1.9 TDI 110 and V6 TDI engines. Particularly on the 1.9 TDI 110 made by July 1998, but also on many V TDIs, until July 6, 1999, the turbine had variable geometry.

1.9 TDI engine. Audi A4 produced until June 1998. crankshaft oil leakage, when engine is idle, no turning.

Mechanical vibration. Some diesel models had problems with transmission and clutch vibrations.

When transmitting power, the problem can only be caused by a leakage of the hydraulic clutch system.

Automatic transmissions exist, though we do not recommend them, and especially the first specimens, because they are not very good, and repairs are very complicated, and therefore very expensive.

The upper and lower oscillating shoulders are often quickly worn out and thus increase the cost to the owner. The ends of the struts, or the complete front skirt, which is considered to be Audi's weakest point, did not perform better.

Front bearings. On some Audi A4s manufactured until February 1996, the problem is the weakness of these wheel bearings.

Rear bearings. The Audi A4 produced until June 1997, replacing the bearing for more than 80 km.

4 and 1995 Audi A1996, wind whipping around the car door. The problem was solved by adjusting the door (hinges).

On all Audi A4s, especially those manufactured up to 1998, the window problem (engine or part of the mechanism) is repeated. Needed replacement, sometimes the problem is repeated.

4 Audi A1995, interior lighting may not work.

The Audi A4 manufactured until June 1995 had problems with uneven front wheel wear.

The 4 Audi A1995 had a problem with the incorrect fuel gauge.
