2.7 TDI engine (Volkswagen, Audi) - Opinions, problems and failures

2.7 TDI engine

Another Volkswagen engine. This time we look TDI 2,7 liter unit. Is the engine worth the recommendation?

2.7 The TDI mostly went with models from Ingolstadt (Audi A4, A5, A6). It is based on 6 cylinders, 24 valves and direct fuel injection Common rail (Bosh piezoelectric injectors). When it comes to equipment, there are a turbocharger with variable blade geometry, chain as a drive, floating flywheel and particle filter. The engine is offered in two power variants: 180 and 190 hp.

Problems and malfunctions - 2.7 TDI engine

It is important to note that the 2.7 TDI is a much more successful engine than the 2.5 TDI, which is considered one of the biggest accidents of the German concern. However, he is not deprived of several significant shortcomings. Let's start with the drive. The manufacturer claims that the chain-based system is indestructible. In practice, however, it turns out that even this solution has a limited lifespan. In the case of this engine, it is recommended to replace it at about 300.000 kilometers. After all, you can talk about high endurance.

Another thing with the chain as the drive. Both tensioners and chains are relatively expensive elements. True, operating costs can be a major problem for this unit. Although not too common, its construction is complicated, so a possible replacement involves a lot of money.

Another proof of this is the Bosch piezoelectric injectors listed above. Often, diesel-powered car users give these elements for regeneration. In the case of 2.7 TDIs, this is not possible because they are practically irreparable.

In addition to the aforementioned costs, it is difficult to find severe disadvantages during daily use. The engine consumes relatively little fuel (7-8 liters in a 100km mixed cycle).
Decent performance combined with a high work culture is commendable.

Recommendation - 2.7 TDI engine

According to us the 2.7 TDI is a pretty good suggestion for people looking for a car for long routes. He is strong enough, has manners and relatively high endurance. So if someone finds a neatly maintained Audi half-car with this engine, it's worth considering buying one. However, you need to remember the higher maintenance costs associated with complex construction.
