Toyota Corolla E90

The Toyota Corolla E90 is the highest quality car in the world. In the last twenty years, it has been mostly first on the list of the most reliable cars, along with Toyota Carina, Toyota Starlet, and today Toyota Avensis and Toyota Yaris. Toyota Corolla has almost no weak points, because it is a far better quality car than the competition, and even much more expensive cars such as Mercedes. Its only drawback is its Japanese origin, if that can be a drawback at all, because you will never be able to sell it as easily as, say, VW Golf II diesel.

In our country, the most common was the Toyota Corolla E90 1.3, which has a 75 hp engine, which develops at 6200 rpm, which is an indicator that the maximum has not been taken out of the engine. The maximum torque of the engine is reached at 4200 rpm and is 103 Nm. The torque curve is not very mild and the engine requires a minimum of 3500 rpm to pull properly. Over 5000 rpm becomes noisy, but it is still possible to talk in the car. The engine has one camshaft, and 12 valves, two intake and one exhaust per cylinder, and it’s definitely not a sports engine.

The more powerful 1.6-liter version has 105 hp, two camshafts, 16 valves, but no sporting features. Admittedly, with it, the Toyota Corolla E90 reached 100 km / h in 10,4 seconds, which was two decades ago a truly spacious result in this class. Consumption of about 8,5 liters on average was more than acceptable, given more than solid performance.

The most popular version of the Toyota Corolla was the sedan, the four-door one. The liftback, a model with different light groups, and five doors were also imported, it was equipped with the aforementioned more powerful 105 hp engine, and the hatchback, a compact five-door version, was not even imported into the SFRY. Customers in the former Yugoslavia were not offered a station wagon version (Toyota Corolla combi - as it was christened in Toyota), nor a sports Toyota Corolla GTI.

Very interesting Toyota Corolla Tercel, with all-wheel drive is a rarity in our area. The 4-x-4 wagon and the 1.6-liter 105-hp unit offered a 327-liter boot, but it could be swung down by the seats. The factory promised an average consumption of 8,6 liters, but the Corolla Tercel 1.6 XLi 4 x 4 consumed almost 10,0 liters on average.

The simple, easy-to-inspect cockpit was made of hard but high quality plastic. Excellent finish, has always been a trademark of Toyota. Automatic transmission versions, as pictured, have been a rarity in Europe.

The brakes are also not sporty, namely while they are cold, the Toyota Corolla E90 stops extremely quickly and safely, but after a dozen sudden brakes, the Japanese give in, and the stopping distance becomes significantly longer. The engine is designed to last a long time but also to consume little, because with an average consumption of 6,7 liters of unleaded gasoline, it is more economical, especially if the weight of the Corolla of 975 kg is taken into account. Although the engine is the most reliable in its class, it is characterized by noisy operation at higher speeds, but the insulation is not top notch. Take all this with a grain of salt because we compare the Corolla to the best, the Golf III, Opel Astro, Honda Civic, Peugeot 306.

If you look at all aspects of this car starting from acceleration, top speed, fuel consumption, comfort, stability, reliability and not to mention further, you will come to the conclusion that Toyota is perhaps the best choice. It offers enough space in the back seat, so it will satisfy a family of four without much difficulty. As for service intervals, they are at 15000 km.

Oil changes are made every 15000 km as recommended by the factory, but for engines with many kilometers behind it is recommended to replace it at 7500 km, which will certainly not damage the engine. The cost of maintaining this car is in the ranking of the Golf III and Opel Astra, of course, if we compare the prices of the original spare parts. Some parts are more expensive, but some are cheaper. Corrosion is worth considering, though, since over 15s are still corrosive, but are much better protected than, say, a Opel Kadetta or Astra F.

Unfortunately, the time of cheap Toyota is over, even used Toyota is priced at us, because today it is clear to everyone how good these cars are. All those who maintained this car in authorized service had no problems up to at least 400000 miles. If you buy a Corolla that is over 20 years old today, it is quite possible that even after such a long time, this "Japanese" will serve you faithfully.
