Peugeot 504

On September 12, 1968, Peugeot introduced its latest top model on offer - the 504 Berline. At first glance, it didn't seem like the French had done anything sensational, but what the 504 managed to do only rarely succeeded.

The entire African continent was inundated with models in the 70s and 80s Peugeot  504. That car was so adored there that many say that it came to the status of a true monopolist. And not just those years, because even today in Africa you will see this car, some 30 years after its production, every step of the way. And besides the old "old timers" you will also see brand new, polished 504s! Wondering how? Simply, Africans are so crazy about this car, so in some parts of the black continent, the legendary Peugeot .

Peugeot 504

Peugeot 504 was introduced in 1968. At first, it didn't seem like the French had prepared a technological marvel, but the Peugeot 504 slowly but surely conquered Europe and then the whole world. Is it necessary to mention at all the loyalty of French taxi drivers to the Peugeot 504, and not only French ones. Add to all the successes on the sports stage (Safari rally, Paris-Dakar, Monte Carlo rally), its integration for military purposes (models with all-wheel drive), and it was also used by firefighters.

Rapid development

When the Peugeot 504 appeared it was powered by two almost identical engines. It was, therefore, a four-cylinder engine with a volume of 1796 cc, which in a weaker version with a carburetor developed 82 hp, while the "Injection" system provided more than a decent 97 hp. Both models were available with either a manual or automatic ZF transmission. The sunroof was standard, and the parking brake lever was located behind the steering wheel as well as the gear lever. In 1972, both commands were moved to their current location - the floor between the seats. In 1969, two new variants of the Peugeot 504 were presented in Geneva. These were the more exclusive Coupe and Cabriolet models (more in the box below). A year later, a new more powerful engine with a volume of 1971 cc appears, again in two versions - 93 and 104 hp. In addition, the first 2112 cc diesel with 65 hp was introduced. Later that year, Peugeot also introduced the Peugeot 504 station wagon. It was longer than the Berlin with a larger wheelbase, a higher roof in the rear and a more robust rear axle. It was available in as many as three variants - Familiale, Break and Comerciale, and with three rows of seats there was room for 7-8 passengers (in Nigeria that means 12-13 people).

Idemo dalje

In ten years, Peugeot has produced a total of 2.100.000 units. Demand has not yet abated. In 1979, Peugeot introduced the fifth version of the Peugeot 504, the Pick-Up model. It could later be ordered in various combinations, with a diesel and petrol engine. It was also a great base for many processors who offered even more complex versions. So Dangel converted the Peugeot 504 into an all-wheel drive model. In May of the same year, the successor was introduced - the 4 model - but that did not mean the end for the Peugeot 505. Not even close!

Even today

European production lasted until 1983, and more than 3 million copies were produced. But, as we stated earlier, it was nowhere near the end of a lion’s life. Production is moving to Argentina, China, Kenya and Nigeria - and it continues today! However, only in Kenya and Nigeria (Argentina shut down production after 18 years) where this car is a term. Although the typical sophistication "moved away" with the relocation of production from the European continent, it was and still is the 504, after the 205 the best-selling Peugeot model.

Special cars for special people - that was Peugeot's goal with which he addressed Pininfarini, an Italian design genius. Pininfarina, as always, had the answer. Great, of course. The Italian designer gave the family Peugeot 504 new sexy lines and the cars immediately became an instant hit. For the beautiful line, Peugeot has prepared an adequate sports engine - V6 with 144 hp. A total of 31.162 of these beauties were produced, of which 8.188 were convertibles. Needless to say, today these cars represent true collector's values.
