Under the designation P2 (the second post-war German Ford project), it brought German buyers the style of a two-year-old American cousin. But Opel did it better: with 239.978 copies of the Ford Taunus P2 produced, three Olympia Records P1 came on each. Only the successor, much better remembered both in the West and in our region, known as the ‘Badewanne’, will balance sales figures and once again make Ford a more significant market player in continental Europe.

The offer included 2- and 4-door sedans (another successful competitor, Borgward Isabella, never offered more than 2), as well as a three-door station wagon and a van based on it. The Deutsch workshop also produced some convertibles. Because of its ‘American’ pleasant ride, it was called the ‘flying carpet’, while today it is largely known as the ‘Baroque Taunus’. In Germany, it is relatively popular as an oldtimer, but elsewhere it is not particularly appreciated.

The Taunus P2 had a 4-cylinder engine with 1698 cc and 60 hp, measuring 4375x1670x1500 mm and weighing 1010-1110 kg and could pull up to 128 km / h. The two-tone bodywork, fins and chrome make it an attractive old-timer today, with the Deluxe version offering more equipment and even more attractive design details. There were on our roads, but still noticeably fewer than later Taunus, and the surviving specimens are mostly awaiting restoration or sale outside.
