Ladder alignment

Trap centering

Trap centering involves adjusting all angles in the suspension system. If done well, the driver will get the best performance possible. Well-done centering of the ladder brings better durability and extends tire life.

It is recommended that you center the ladder every 10.000 km. It is mandatory to center the ladder in the following situations:

  • when parts of the suspension system are changed,
  • when new tires are put on,
  • when the vehicle drifts to one side,
  • when irregularities in wear are observed tire,
  • when the steering wheel is not standing straight when the car is going straight.

Trap centering (adjustment)

Prior to commencing centering, a thorough check of all parts of the steering and suspension is mandatory. By centering the ladder, the wheels are made to stand on a straight line and are parallel to each other. The main angles to adjust are: tilt, tilt, and range.

Wheel slope

The camber is the slope of the wheel relative to the vertical axis of the substrate when viewed from the front. If the top of the wheel is facing the car, the slope is negative, and if it is facing outside, the slope is positive.

Improper slope will lead to premature and irregular tread wear tire - Tires will be used more outside or inside. If the incline is not well adjusted at only one point, the car will pull to the side.

Adjusting the slope results in less wear tire, improving stability and reducing pressure on other parts of the suspension system.

Stop

The caster is the angle that the longitudinal axis of the shock absorber coincides with the vertical of the base when viewed from the side. If at the upper part the point of the shock absorber axis is pulled backwards - the travel is positive, and if it is thrown forward - the travel is negative.

Adjusting this angle gives you the best stability, turn, and the steering wheel returns to the center position quickly after the turn

Wheel range

The range (toe) is the angle formed by the wheels with respect to the longitudinal axis of the vehicle when viewed from above. The tendency is that the wheels always be parallel.

Properly tuned range is essential for tire life.

There are other angles that are checked and adjusted when centering the ladder: retraction, axle inclination, turn, rear axle direction…

For driving safety and tire life, it is extremely important that the belt adjustment is done regularly. Usually people remember this when it's late, when the tires are already worn out incorrectly - on the outside or inside. Then the trap geometry cannot be adjusted correctly.

Even on the cost side, delaying this operation is unjustified. Trap centering costs 10-15 Euros, which is many times less than the price of a single tire. If the driver is negligent, they will eventually need to replace at least two tires because they will be misused.
