Peugeot 406 1995 - 2004 - Used vehicle, breakdowns

Peugeot 406

Peugeot 406

The Peugeot 406 follows the philosophy of comfortable French sedans, so expect plenty of driving pleasure. It is quite heavy for the smaller engines, so we recommend some more powerful ones up to 2.0 liters in volume. Quite a few specimens have had problems with engine cooling, and the air conditioner is known to go crazy, especially if the winter is completely forgotten. The brakes are too expensive to repair, so be sure to check them.

APPEARANCE - Peugeot 406

The Peugeot 406 is a large sedan, and even a Frenchman can only mean one thing - a comfortable ride on the city and on the highways with minimal noise coming into the cabin.

The driver's position itself is good and clear, although the steering wheel does not adjust in depth. There are no major complaints about the accommodation of other passengers. There is enough space for everyone. The dashboard is not classic, it is noticeable that a lot of thought has been put into its final appearance.

The Peugeot 406 seats are comfortable in France, so don't expect too much effort when traveling longer. The trunk is spacious, the loading threshold low enough, and when necessary, the rear bench folds down and gives a fairly flat surface to accommodate bulky things.

ENGINE - Peugeot 406

Peugeot's HDI engines are known to be good workforce, so in this case we recommend one of them. It should be noted that 1.9 turbo diesel was fitted at the very beginning of production, which we advise you to avoid because it is too noisy.

A more sophisticated variant, 2,0 HDI, which replaced it exists in two variants. With 90 and 110 horsepower. After 2001 came the 2,2 HDI with a full 138bhp, although we believe that a two-liter diesel, which is weaker, is quite sufficient for this sedan.

From gasoline there are 1,8, 2,0, 2,0T and 3,0 V6 engines. If you decide on one of these, the recommendation is at two liters of volume, with or without a turbine, we leave that choice to you.

1,8 liter petrol is not a bad choice, but it does require a hand on the transmission. The strongest of the four gasoline engines turns this boat into a practical race car, but keep in mind that pump visits will be very common.

FAULTS - Peugeot 406

One of the biggest problems Peugeot The 406 is known for its brake discs, so be sure to check for wear when buying this half. This spare part is quite expensive, so unless you are careful about unplanned expenses.

Regular replacement of the coolant every two years should prevent the leaks or clogging of the radiator that the Peugeot 406 is prone to, so check that the previous owner was zealous about this. When looking at the service booklet, look at the gear belt, which changes to about 80000 km.

There were problems with the electricity, especially with the air conditioner, so check it for proper operation. All in all, the Peugeot parts are not cheap at all, so open your four eyes when buying a used car and test all the electronics on the car well.

I have a Pezo 406 and the steering wheel is adjustable in both height and depth.

I have been driving it for 5 years (2.0hdi 80kw) and none of the above are true. After that I took the Audi b7 and I can tell you that the Peso is better, more economical and more comfortable. I like to say that the 406ica is the best car in the world!

  • greeting. imma. owned this peso 2.0 version of 110 hp only. the problem I have has been that for a long time. the period is that while driving the speedometer drops to zero and tom. occasion. there is a noticeable loss of about 20% of power-traction of the engine .. after a few seconds to a minute it also returns, you feel the return of power and the car goes on normally .. but this happens to me more and more often …… I note that when starting the engine the display says engine immobilize fault or something like that… ..
