Mercedes 260 D 1936 - 1940 - History of cars
The first car with a diesel engine had 45 hp and developed 95 km / h.
In 1936, at the Berlin Motor Show, the first diesel car was displayed: the Mercedes-Benz 260 D. During this time, the ultimate sedan, the W138 series, was 439 long, 163 wide and 305 inches in wheelbase. Robust bodywork relied on massive chassis and independent suspension! Back, though, was the oscillating suspension, which was used until the 190 D, 'W110' tails, from 1961 to 1968. Such a rear suspension was also provided by Fić, Beetle, Too bad 1000 MB… It was powered by a 2545 cc four-cylinder in-line diesel, with eight valves and OHV distribution, which remained current until the mid-80s, and Fiat used it in the 903 cc engine until recently. It developed a solid 45 hp, at 3000 rpm.
The massive diesel with three crankshaft bearings had indirect injection by a regular Bosch high-pressure pump via atria and valves in the head and a camshaft in the block.
The first series Mercedes The 260 D had three gears, the first unsynchronized, plus overdrive, and since 1937 a fully synchronized four-speed transmission has been installed. The luxury diesel sedan, with a total weight of 1530 kg, reached a solid 95 km / h and consumed an average of 9 liters per 100 km. It was then revolutionary low consumption. Due to its reliability, durability and economy, it became the car of German taxi drivers. It was produced in three body versions, classic (saloon), with open rear part (landaulet) and open (cabriolet). By 1940, when Mercedes-Benz had completely switched to war production, about 2000 units had been produced.

When the German engineer Rudolf Diesel patented the project 'Working principle and version of internal combustion engines' in Berlin on February 23, 1893, he had no idea that he had turned perhaps the most important page in technical history. He developed the construction with the experts of the MAN factory from Augsburg for three years, and at the beginning of 1896, the first diesel engine started working. It had one cylinder, a volume of 19,2 liters and was given 20 hp at 172 / min. Due to its durability, reliability and favorable consumption, it soon began to be widely used in a number of industrial plants. The first truck diesel engine was made in 1923. It had a volume of 6,2 liters and a power of 40 hp at 900 rpm.
