ENGINE - Vw Passat B6

Vw Passat B6

Vw Passat B6

The Vw Passat B6 engine range is large.
The petrol engines of the Passat B6 four-cylinder range from 102hp to 200hp. In addition, there is a 250hp six-cylinder engine, a 2008 sports model of 36hp R300. The vast majority of the Vw Passat B6 is with diesel engines from 105 to 170 hp. A special case is TDI Blue Motion, available since 2007.

The Vw Passat B6 began its career in 2005 with 1.6 (102hp), 1.6 TDI (115hp), 2.0 TDI (150hp), 2.0 TFSI (200hp) and 3.2 FSI V6 (250hp) and turbo diesel 1.9 TDI (105 hp), 2.0 TDI (140 hp) and 2.0 TDI (170 hp). 2007 engine offerings increased for petrol 1.4 TSI (121 HP) and 1.8 TSI (160 HP) and 1.9 TDI turbo diesel (105 HP) with BlueMotion technology. The 140 hp 2.0 TDI has a new injection system. For the first time, Vw uses common-rail injection, engine designation changed to TDI - CR. This reduces the noise and vibration of the popular turbo diesel.
A year later, in addition to the petrol version of the 2.0 TSI (200 hp), the Vw Passat B6 range is enriched with the strongest variation of the R36 3.6 V6 engine with 300 hp. Also, a new turbo diesel 2.0 TDI (110 hp), also available with BlueMotion technology, has been introduced. This also replaced the old 1.9 TDI engine. Common-rail technology applied to all Vw Passat B6 turbo diesel engines.
In 2009, Volkswagen offered an efficient 1.4 TSI (122 hp) gasoline engine and a 1,6 turbo diesel TDI BlueMotion, 2.0 TDI BlueMotion Blue (143 hp). The latest offering includes an addition to BlueMotion start-stop technology. In the case of the Blue version, in addition to the BlueMotion elements, the technology uses an ultra-modern SCR catalyst, providing a very high level of gas purity. Passat B6 2.0 TDI Blue, requires the use of a special AdBlue additive.

VW Passat B6 1.6 MPI
robust and simple engine, two valves per cylinder, the previous generation is 74 KW, now delivers just like the Octavia 75 KW / 102 hp, acceleration from 0 km / h to 100 km / h in 12.4 s, top speed 190 km / h with an average consumption of 7,7 l / 100 km. 1.6 engine era design, too weak for the Vw Passat B6. Its advantages are ease of use and ease of repair.

VW Passat B6 1.6 FSI
offered in a wide range of models, the 1.6 FSI is a direct injection engine, has four valves per cylinder 85 KW / 115 hp / 155 Nm, Vw Passata B6 accelerates from 0 km / h to 100 km / h in 11,4 s, top speed 200 km / h average consumption 7,5 l / 100 km. This engine has already been proven to be a robust and popular choice in the Touran and Golf, but who left the program in 2008. 1.4 TSI with 90 KW / 122 hp came in its place.

VW Passat B6 2.0 FSI
proven two-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine. The atmospheric engine offers 110 KW / 150 hp / 200 Nm, acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h in 9,4 s, top speed of 213 km / h, average fuel consumption of 8,2 l / 100 km. This more powerful FSI engine has performance and sophistication. This engine debuted in the Golf, and it also offers a code Touran.

VW Passat B6 2.0 T-FSI
this two-liter petrol engine uses a turbocharger and intercooler, which is already highly praised for its combination of capabilities in the Golf GTI, full 200 horsepower, 147 kW at 5500 rpm. / min. High compression ratio 10.3: 1, and torque of 280 Nm / 1800 - 5000 rpm. Very good for dynamic driving. Accelerates from 0 km / h to 100 km / h in 7,7 s, max. Speed 236 km / h. Average fuel consumption is 8,6 l / 100 km.

VW Passat B6 3.2 V6 FSI, V6
borrowed from an Audi A6, it has 184 kW / 250 hp, a top speed of 250 km / h.

VW Passat B6 3.6 V6 FSI / R36
The Passat R36 cannot be confused with the "civilian" version of the Passat. An instance equipped with a 3,6L FSI 250 hp engine accelerates to 6,9 in 246 seconds and reaches a top speed of 36 km / h, while the R6 VR30 with 5,6 hp takes 100 seconds to reach 250 km / h, maximum speed electronically limited to 13,9 km / h, the downside is the consumption of two engines, which in the city is 12,8 liters or 100 liters per XNUMX km.

Diesel 1.9-liter TDI, four-cylinder, 1896, 105 hp
The almost legendary 1.9 TDI engine also appeared in the Passat B6, but only in the 105 hp / 77 kW / 250 Nm version, top speed is 188 km / h, acceleration from 0 km / h to 100 km / h in 12.1 s, average consumption 5,6 l / 100 km, noisy and low consumption. In later years, it was replaced by a more modern 1.6 TDI engine of the same power.

Vw Passat B6 2.0 TDI
Great compromise between power and fuel economy. It retains its value and extremely reliable motto, which is also suitable for more demanding users.

The VW Passat B6 2.0 TDI comes in two power levels of 140 hp or 170 hp. In early 2008, the 2.0 TDI PD was replaced by much more sophisticated common-rail TDI engines, delivering the same 140hp or 170bhp as the 2.0 TDI PD, but far smoother and quieter with more power, less vibration and lower noise levels.
Both are also available with all-wheel drive.

VW Passat B6 2.0 TDI, 140 hp
has been able to prove itself in other Volkswagen Group models. The four-valve engine produces 103 KW / 140 bhp and 320 Nm / 1800 rpm. Up to a hundred under ten seconds (9,8 s), top speed 209 km / h, consumption 5,9 liters every 100 km. Designed to be the most popular engine on offer with the new Passat B6, this engine offers an outstanding balance between performance and economy.

VW Passat B6 2.0 TDI, 170 hp
based on the weaker unit, two balance shafts were added, a new intake manifold, Siemens management, and conventional nozzles were replaced with brand new ones with piezo-controlled nozzles. The system operates at 2200 bar and consumes an average of 6,1 liters. With a maximum power of 170 hp / 125 kW, fuel consumption is similar to the 140 hp engine on which it is based.

Passat B6 BlueMotion: COMMON RAIL - 110 HP
BlueMotion is equipped with a 2.0-liter TDI that develops 110 hp (at 4200 rpm) and delivers a maximum torque of 250 Nm at 1500 rpm. Combined with a 5-speed manual transmission, the 2.0 TDI allows the Passat BlueMotion to go up to 198 km / h (Variant 196 km / h) and 100 km with 4,9 liters of diesel. To achieve this, the German sedan uses a proven transmission integrated system and start / stop function, which saves 0,2 liters of diesel per 100 km. Designed for low emission production, it meets Euro 5 regulations.

TDI PASSAT Blue with SCR catalytic converter
The Oassat TDI Blue already complies with the most restrictive European exhaust standard, the Euro 6 standard. This version is equipped with a new SCR catalyst, which together with the AdBlue additive reduces nitrogen oxide emissions. SCR represents selective catalytic reductions and refers to the fact that this device has a very special task, it must transform the nitrogen oxides (NOx) component of the exhaust gases into nitrogen and water. This version of the Vw Passat B6 runs a 2.0 TDI common-rail with 143 hp, which allows it to reach a top speed of 210 km / h (207 km / h variant) and consumes at 1346 km one diesel fuel tank for the sedan and 1273 km for the variant.

PASSAT B6 TDI Ecofuel
Passat TSI EcoFuel, the first CNG direct injection vehicle with compressor and turbocharger. Its a 150hp engine paired with a dual clutch gearbox DSG 7 degrees, it allows you to use 4,4 kg of natural gas over a distance of 100 km and emits a small amount of CO2: 119 g / km. The conversion of TSI engines to methane required profound changes: it was necessary to harden valves, links and pistons. Even the compressor and turbocharger have been modified and special gas injection nozzles have been integrated into the suction pipes. Despite the interventions, the engine maintains a sporty spirit that allows the Passat TSI EcoFuel to reach 210 km / h and reach 100 km / h in 9,7 seconds.

The Vw Passat B6 is available with three 6-speed manual transmission options, DSG  Direct Shift 6 speed and Tiptronic 6 speed automatic transmission.

DSG - Direct Shift Gearbok
The Direct Shift Transmission is a true innovation, combining the comfort of an automatic transmission with the responsiveness and power of a manual transmission.
With this new clutch control system, transmission breaks that are typical even of automatic transmissions no longer occur. This is achieved by an intelligent hydraulic and electronic transmission control system, two wet clutches and two input and output shafts in each gearbox half.
This combination allows for a higher standby gear until it is selected. In other words, if the car is in third gear, the fourth is selected but not yet activated. As soon as the ideal point is reached, the clutch on the third gear opens and the second clutch closes and engages the fourth gear under precise electronic control. As the opening and closing actions of the two clutches overlap, the smooth gear change and the entire change process is completed in less than four hundredths of a second.
Faults rarely occur and DSG gearbox is very popular with used Volkswagen vehicles.
Volkswagen DSG gearbox allows for very sporty driving and also low fuel consumption in the Passat B6.

The Vw Passat B6 shows how modern bodywork to be front or all-wheel drive should be in terms of comfort and handling. The new suspension on the rear axle is acoustically insulated, and the McPherson front suspension with aluminum elements and electro / mechanical power steering (has the ability to change the feel of the steering wheel depending on speed and driving situations) was used for the first time in this class. tried to provide maximum handling, comfort and safety.

The 16-inch brakes are all-wheel-drive and provide the same stopping power to both 75-hp drivers and 200-horsepower drivers. The brakes are equipped with a special disc cleaner that prevents water from forming a thin film on the discs while driving in the rain, reducing the initial braking force. Now the trip computer dries the disks gently with the brakes every five minutes.

The electronic parking brake (which brakes all four wheels and can be used in an emergency to slow the car) is activated by a button on the instrument panel and released automatically when the driver is ready to go. Drivers can choose a dashboard with wood or metal trim. The button that activates the new parking brake is located on the left, a typical VW mounted light switch. Now it is necessary to press the button instead of pulling the lever.

KVAROV - Vw Passat B6

The failure rate of the Vw Passat B6 depends on the drive unit. Most of these failures are mainly related to vehicles from the first year of production.

Gasoline engines enjoy very good recommendations. They are durable and rarely break down. In their case, it is difficult to talk about common failures. An exception is the 1.4 TSI engine, on which the creaking of the electromagnetic coupling compressor (in the range 2000 - 3000 rpm) occurs. Despite the strange noises, the clutch does the job.

November 2006: Revocation - Replacement of a motor computer on 1.6 FSI and 2.0 FSI models produced by March 2005, after water penetrated the engine computer. The engine jerks or shuts off.

TSI engine. If the chain draws and / or the tensioners are loosened. It is expensive to repair, but if nothing is done it can cause severe damage to the engine due to bursting or skipping.

1.9 TDI engines. Defect in software. Required software upgrade.

The most serious allegations are the most popular version 2.0 TDI, which after a lot of mileage shows head cracks, prematurely worn out flywheel and problems with the oil pump. Unfortunately, repairs to these failures are very expensive.
The 2,0 TDI Siemens injectors are problematic and often canceled but have been modified by Volkswagen at their own expense in their authorized workshops. This repair was not always free, looking at the age and mileage of the car.

Those who opted for the 2.0 TDI engine (pump-injector), from 110 hp to 170 hp, must cope with such failures as cracking the cylinder head (especially models up to 2007), stuck turbochargers, faulty swimming flywheel or fuel pump.

VW Passat B6 2,0 TDI engine flowmeter problems, the problem of all modern diesel. Also problems with the particulate filter.

VW Passat B6 2.0 TDI (140 bhp BKP engine) has massive problems with fuel injector nozzles.

Cylinder head. On the first 2.0 TDI 140hp models, porosity of the head can cause abnormal coolant consumption and, in the worst case, engine overheating.

Manufacturer recall to replace Siemens piezoelectric injectors 2006 - 2009 2.0 TDI BMN engine (seems to cause problems with DPF).
All cars with 2.0 TDI PD engines that use piezoelectric Siemens injectors and Siemens ECUs are affected by this problem. Most problems are on the Passat B6 2.0 TDI 140 hp BKD. No problem since 2009 and the introduction of common rail 2.0 TDI engines.

Turbine. Some cases of turbidity in the turbine at 2.0 TDI before May 2005.

1.6 and 2.0 TDI engines. The risk of water penetrating the injection computer.

September 2005: 2.0 TDI engines manufactured between January and April 2005 recalled for services to reprogram particle filter software. The risk of losing power.

In case of a PD motor, when replacing the gear belt, it is obligatory to replace the water pump and install a pump with a metal impeller. A problem with water pump bearings can lead to the toothed belt and engine failure.

Cruise control can be deactivated while driving. The fault is most often on the clutch switch.

Oil pump. The 2,0 TDI engine fired the oil pump-driven chain at 80000 km to 100000 km. Since 2006, it has switched to a short hexagonal shaft that drives an oil pump which has also been a problem, rounding off after 50000 km.

For the front trap, the oscillating shoulders and ends of the clamps are sensitive.

Tires. Improper adjustment of the factory rails can cause tire wear and tear on the first manufactured models quickly and incorrectly.

A typical mistake of the Vw Passat B6 is the failure of the electric parking brake. It is also problematic to activate and remove the parking brake.

Wipers stop running in the rain, penetrating water into the engine, most commonly with the 2,0 TDI.

Water enters the headlights and blows the bulbs.

Many complaints about the malfunctioning of the automatic air conditioner.

Vw Passat B6

 CONCLUSION

VW Passat B6 family car, defect rate mainly depends on the engine. If you want to enjoy reliability and availability, you should choose the weaker engines. If you buy this car you have to be prepared for the many maintenance costs involved. Do not allow yourself to neglect regular service, lest you increase the cost that must be incurred to keep your car in full working order.

An extremely high-quality and comfortable car that will never fail you, with a moderate 2.0 TDI ride (8 valves is recommended, because the one with 16 valves knows how to burn life and empty the pocket) consumes about 5 liters. 1.9 TDI of 105 horses, also about 5 liters, but drastically less traction. The 1.9 TDI, on the other hand, is certainly cheaper to maintain.

All in all a good investment that does not lose value over time. When you are bored you will sell it very easily and in the short term. The advice is to avoid cheap Volkswagen Passat b6 in a wide range, as this will turn into an unsolvable nightmare, depleting you significantly, and eventually you will not even be able to bring it to its proper state.

Is the author of this text realistic and praising 2.0 tdi as the most reliable engine? I have no say, really. He also praised the E39 as the best flawed car. And the augo has a handful of flaws and falinka that are sometimes above average compared to the competition. That's why he honored the Mercedes E Class V210 series and didn't exactly praise the Audi A6.
