Volkswagen Passat 2.0 TDI HIGHLINE

Volkswagen Passat 2.0 TDI HIGHLINE

Passats can be stolen from you, models up to 2005 have problems with ball joints, the 1.6 petrol has a sensitive thermostat and consumes a lot, diesel engines have to count on a sensitive floating flywheel and air flow meter, and 2.0 TDI also have sensitive injectors. Otherwise, it is a very high quality and reliable car, which keeps the price well and is worth buying. The test model is from the sixth generation (B6), introduced in 2005, which received a successor as early as 2010. Then came the Passat B7 model. With a 1.9 TDI engine with 105 hp, it was one of the most interesting on offer. But when buying such a used diesel, one should be careful, because due to its good properties and low consumption, the current owners rarely sell before expensive breakdowns are approaching.

The body is very high quality and when buying a used one, you should only make sure that the car did not have a bigger car crash. The overall mechanics are of high quality, which solved the problems of the ball joints of the double transverse arms of the front suspension of the previous series B5 and B5.5, which the Passat took over from the Audi A4 and A6 (it had the same concept with a longitudinally mounted engine). The return to the Golf concept in the Passat B6, with a transversely mounted engine, proved to be a complete hit. Volkswagen's sedan solved the uncomfortable problem with the ball joints, but it got a problem with the rubber supports from the Golf, although not very pronounced.

A solid diesel sedan needs to be checked for engine and transmission and, if maintained regularly, is cost effective regardless of the miles traveled

As with other Wolfsburg models, excellent tin can be an important virtue. The Passat B6 is built very solidly, all based on a solid and durable body structure that promises longevity and reliability. Mechanical workmanship is best seen with older models, which for a long time retain the compactness and precision of all essential assemblies. Still, the Passat is not a reliability record, it is not even close to the top.

Solidity and reliability should be distinguished - the Passat B6 is more solid than the Mazda 6 and Toyota Avensis, but less reliable. The problem was mainly in the first two years of production, primarily with the 'pump-injector' diesel, 2.0 TDI, as we tested. So, a quick tip - if you can choose, be sure to choose the 1.9 TDI. Although one will think that 105 hp is too little, in reality it is quite enough. That engine, with eight valves per cylinder, is more than enough, and it is very reliable and durable. The only problem is, as we have already mentioned, with the air flow meter and the floating flywheel.

Although the leather lining of the steering wheel shows the first signs of wear, everything is in very good condition, the controls retained precision and the seats did not deform

We tested a 2008 model, with 106.604 km. The mileage is authentic and confirmed by the service booklet of the authorized service. Unfortunately, this is not the rule in our market, so it is important to check the model you are buying. The condition of the engine should be checked separately. Heavy ignition and restless idling, ie shaking when changing gears and adding gas, are a bad sign. This also applies to worn discs. There were no extraordinary failures in the test model, except for the replacement of the injectors within the warranty period. There were only problems with Siemens injectors and after the installation of Bosch, there were no more problems. The front selenium blocks were also replaced.

The mileage for the five-year-old model is not too high, but after the serious wear of the front discs, which will need to be replaced by a maximum of 20.000 km and the already slightly corroded exhaust system, it can be seen that the previous owner did not caress it. But everything is still in very good condition. The engine has a slightly rougher operation, and the stroke of the gear lever and the brake pedal are slightly extended. But it has maintained performance, pulls convincingly, and consumes an average of about six liters. The good condition is confirmed by the compact trap and steering wheel without gaps. All indications are that the purchase is worthwhile, although the price of 14.500 euros is not low. But, the Passat holds its price well, especially diesel, and it doesn't lose much. But, at a good price, it is not bad to buy 1.6 petrol, which is very reliable and durable, but consumes an average of ten liters.

The two-liter turbo diesel, after replacing the Bosch pump-injector assembly with Siemens, is fault-free. The customer is expected to replace the gear belt with a spinner at 120.000 km

The two-liter turbodiesel, after replacing Siemens' 'pump-injector' assembly with Bosch's, works flawlessly. The buyer is expected to replace the toothed belt with a spanner at 120.000 km
