Volkswagen Polo 1995 - 2001 - Used, engine, failures

Volkswagen Polo

Volkswagen Polo

Volkswagen The polo is well-made, but every model, including this one, can turn out to be quirky. The equipment is small, especially in earlier versions, and the enjoyment of the ride is not excessive. The cylinder head gasket can loosen, which should be serviced in the short term, and check the suspension (and if it is made).

APPEARANCE

VW had planned for Polo to devote everything to enjoyment and comfort, even though it was nothing more than a supermini. Suspension absorbs unevenness, though not quite so quietly. Switches and controls are lightweight, logically spaced and easy to use.

The driving style itself is light cruising around the city as well as on the open road, so this is not a car for those with excess gasoline in their blood. The appearance itself is not very radical but generally receives a passing grade. As is usually the case with German manufacturers, every piece of equipment is paid extra, so in the basic variant, don't expect much besides the standard servo.

MOTOR

Of the gasoline, the least you'll find is 1,4, which is quite satisfying to drive around town. The average consumption is about six liters of unleaded gasoline. If you're planning on the road, we recommend a 1,6 that better maintains constant speed and, more importantly, makes less noise. Consumption itself is about a liter higher at 100 km.

There's also a "hot" variant, a 1,7hp 125hp gasoline for those who like to play around with this little one.

From diesel, bypass the 1,9 D fitted to the first models. It has been replaced by a 1998 turbo diesel since 1,9 so we advise either it or the 1,4 TDI that came out in 2000. The average consumption you can expect from all these diesel engines is about five liters of diesel.

Volkswagen Polo - Problems and malfunctions

Polo is a durable toddler, the German level of quality is obvious, so if you maintain it regularly you should have no major problems.

What you may need to pay attention to is the cylinder head gasket, which can suffer, and this will have major consequences if not replaced. Also, increased consumption may indicate that your computer has failed and these repairs are very expensive.

If you find a model with air conditioning, also check its correctness. Take a quick look at any electronic accessories, if any, such as, for example, window lifts. If all this is right, we can only advise buying, and don't worry about subsequent sales. The polo holds the price well and is always a wanted car. On the other hand, many drivers get out of it quickly, so we can say it's a temperamental car.
