Until the mid-70s, Peugeot was known as a manufacturer of boring large sedans. And then they presented one of the first and most successful European super-minis - Peugeot 104!

The Peugeot 104 was introduced in 1973 as the first car in the super-mini class of that French manufacturer. Initially, it appeared exclusively in the three-door version, which was nicknamed "abbreviation" due to its dimensions and appearance. Later, 2, 4, and 5-door versions followed.

The Hundred was quite popular: it has been produced for 15 years, during which more than 1,6 million copies were produced and on its basis two more cars were produced. After downloading Peugeot from Citroën, 1975 from Peugeot 104 are created Citroën LN (Hélène) and LNA (Hélèna). 1982. Talbot, also in assembly Citroën it releases its version 104 and calls it Samba.

In addition to its small size, the Peugeot 104 has earned its popularity with its innovative space utilization and good driving performance and cornering stability. This was achieved by an unusual engineering solution - the engine is housed - upside down. The engine so positioned lowered the center of gravity closer to the shaft, which added stability.

The servicemen protested. Routine engine repairs on the 104 required removing the engine from the car (even the spare wheel was located above the engine!). But time has shown that the masters were unnecessarily frightened - the quality of the engine construction reduced the number of breakdowns and thus compensated for the complications of repairs.

U Peugeot 104 were fitted with four versions of the same gasoline engine - 954 (50 hp), 1.124, 1.219, 1.360 cm3, diesel engines were not offered. Only one gearbox was installed - manual, four-speed.

A toddler of numerous offspring

As we said, soon after the presentation of the Peugeot 104, a five-door variant followed, but it did not have enough luggage space either, so the engineers resorted to an unusual solution at the time - a collapsible rear bench. The four-door sedan version was designed by Pininfarina, and at 3,3 meters was the smallest four-door car in France. From the Pininfarina studios in 1976 comes the Peugette concept car - a roadster based on a hundred and four, but it has never experienced series production.

The successor to the Peugeot 104 was the 205, but it, like Citroën Visa, relied on the Peugeot 104. in many parts and technical solutions. 205!

Believe it or not, the Peugeot 104 still ranks well in the used car market, which is a good indicator of what kind of car it is, and original spare parts for a used car can be purchased online.
