The Mercedes 190 E participated in the DTM championship, and the first victory for the "three-pointed star" team was brought by the then completely anonymous Airton Sena. This racing machine was developed in collaboration with Cosworth, and as a result of that collaboration, the improved 190 E 2-5 with 16 hp and the ultimate Evolution II with 192 hp were soon introduced.

Aerodynamic accessories have been fitted to maintain the car's stability at high speeds, given that it was powered by a 2,5-liter 235-horsepower gasoline. It allowed it to accelerate from standstill to 100 km / h in 7,1 seconds, which was extremely fast for a single passenger car at the time.

The chassis was specifically tailored for this performance and the low-profile tires were 17 inches in diameter, which was also a rarity.
