Citroen Xsara 1997 - 2004 - Used, engines, failures

Citroen Xsara

Citroen Xsara

The Citroen Xsara drives well, and being half-price isn't expensive - but for a reason. It is not overly reliable, especially the clutch and suspension that often cause problems. For everyone, but especially for this model, we recommend that you insist on a service booklet, a complete one, as even minor electrical problems can be expensive to repair.

APPEARANCE
The Citroen Xsara coupe, at first glance, looks a bit like it. If we take down the Citroen mark, it would be hard to say for sure which manufacturer is behind this model. So, it doesn't have a distinctive style, so if you're buying a car for others to turn heads for you, this isn't the one. If you want to ride comfortably, the French have always been the right choice.

It should be noted that only the stronger engines were installed in the Citroen Xsara, so the lower unit was tuned a little harder than we used to with the Citroen. The control panel is clean and clear, with the only objection being to the individual buttons that weaken over time.

The rear bench is not overly comfortable, so if you ride three adults in the back, a shoulder collision is inevitable. The trunk is at the class level and the spare wheel is located under the car, so if you do not want to stay without it, we advise you to buy a safety screw. There are two variants of this coupe - VTR and VTS.

MOTORS
For a start, the Citroen Xsara VTR variant has a 1.6 with 89 hp, which is not overly lively, but after the facelift it has been strengthened to a sufficient 110 hp. There were also 1.8 variants but we recommend the 2.0 VTS with 167 hp, of course provided it is regularly maintained. The average consumption you can expect is about 8 liters of unleaded gasoline, but if you really press the gas, expect even double.

There are also diesel variants, though very rare, that drive 2.0 HDi 110hp engine that fights well with car mass. According to factory data, its average consumption is just over 4 liters of diesel.

FAILURES
And with this one Citroen typical problems for the whole group. The clutch is a downside, as is the suspension, so check the tires for uneven wear. Also check that all the electronics in the car are correct.

Keep in mind that both models, and especially the Citroen Xsara VTS, are driven often with the accelerator pedal to the floor, so check that the car was not accidentally damaged, which is a common occurrence in city buzzers like this.
