The legend of Campagnola begins shortly after the end of II. when they were under the impression of Jeep Wyllis and Toyota war SUV AK10 Italian military units have expressed the need for a similar SUV with all-wheel drive. Of course, two domestic SUVs won the competition in 1951. Alfa Romeo 1900 Matta AR 51 and Fiat Campagnola AR 51. The abbreviation AR used to refer to the name Autoveturra di Ricognizione which in translation meant "reconnaissance vehicle".

The first civilian version of code 1101 debuted in 1951 at the Bari Motor Show. The original version was powered by a 1.9-liter 53-horsepower gasoline engine with which it could develop a maximum of 100 kilometers per hour. The first versions had an independent front suspension and a rigid rear axle with leaf springs and a permanent drive on the rear wheels and attached to the front which was turned on by pulling the T-shaped handle next to the gearbox. Power transmission was performed via a four-speed manual transmission and gearboxes for high and low driving mode. Initially, the Campagnola was offered only with a soft roof and the possibility of lowering the sides so that the rear part could be fully opened. Later versions also got a hardtop. In addition to the usual front seats in the rear of most versions, there were opposite benches, which carried a load capacity of 6 people and 60 kilograms of cargo.

Alfa Romeo 1900 The Matta AR 51 was the first SUV used by the Italian army from 1951 to 1954. But because of the cheaper cost of maintaining Campagnolo in 1954, it became the only official ground for Italian military units. Fiat Campagnola has become a favorite in all other services as well. The gasoline engine was boosted to 56 horsepower and the diesel to 43, increasing the speed to 105 and 90 kilometers per hour, respectively. External corrections were practically negligible. In the mid-1950s, the Campagnoles also assembled at the Red Flag plant in Kragujevac for some time. In 1968, a new diesel 1.9-cylinder 237 engine originally intended for the Fiat 241 TN was launched in Campagnol.

In 1974, the debut of Nuova Campagnola or Campagnola II code 1107, which premiered the same year at the Belgrade Motor Show. The oble lines were replaced by a sharp and cubic and slightly boxy design. The biggest news was under the "suit". Versions for special services were marked AR 76. Nuova Campagnola had independent four-wheel suspension and a serial self-locking differential. A self-locking front wheel differential was also optional. Instead of four manual gearboxes it was equipped with 5 synchronized gears with a gear lever. The integral drive was engaged by moving the T-shaped handle located at the transmission. A new 2.0 liter gasoline engine with a solid 80 horsepower at 4.600 rpm is installed. In 1979, a new diesel engine of 2.0 liter capacity and 60 horsepower was introduced. But with complaints of poor performance in 1981, the installation of a more powerful, 2.5-horsepower 72-horsepower diesel began. With the new engines, maximum speeds for Campagnolu II have climbed up to 115 for diesel and over 120 kilometers per hour for gasoline. Nuova Campagnola was able to overcome the climbs at an inlet angle of 45 degrees and pass through water up to 0.70 meters deep. In 1986, production of Campagnola ceased without successors.
