If someone once told you to close your eyes and try to imagine a classic Mercedes model in the grand tour, this is the car that probably came to your mind first.

It is not overly sleek or overly sporty, but is certainly one of Mercedes' most striking models.

A large car with an aggressive radiator grille and characteristic double headlights, the very appearance immediately convinces that it belongs to the grand tour class, leaving us somewhere halfway between enthusiasm and restraint. This limousine is primarily intended for people who have achieved significant success in life, but are, in addition, refined enough to avoid dependence on one great car.

V8 confusion

The very name Mercedes Benz 280 SE 3.5 is quite confusing. Mercedes is usually expected to have its numerical designation related to engine power, as happened with the 220 SE, 250 SE, and then with the 280 SE model, whose six-cylinder engine had a displacement of 2778 cm3. However, two years after the release of the large W111 series, Mercedes it introduces new 8 cc V3500 engines, incorporates them into coupes and convertibles and gives them the name 3 SE 280 to distinguish them from the previous series.

From August 1969 to July 1971, in the 24 months that the W111 series was in operation, 3270 coupes and 1232 convertible vehicles were produced. So it's no wonder that these V8 versions are extremely rare and in high demand today.

Fast and fun

However, it is not only rare that it makes them extremely desirable in the market today, but it is another reason. Specifically, this model is perhaps the fastest Mercedes car of the time.

Based on the chassis of many great Mercedes models produced between 1959 and 1971, the W111 3.5-liter V8 series, although quite massive and heavy, with 230 horsepower could achieve significant acceleration without showing at any point losing power.

Most cars in the series boast a four-speed automatic transmission, independent suspension and four-wheel hydraulic disc brakes.

According to AutoCar magazine, the Mercedes 280 SE 3.5 was then a textbook example of how experience and careful and simple design can lead to the creation of a sophisticated car with a very powerful engine.
